Last week I got to sneak away to a cabin in the mountains with a few close art friends including our very own Jane Youn and
from Sketchbook Squad and my good friends Larissa Neto and Aliya Smith who live in Atlanta. The plan was simple: eat good food, draw for hours on in, and maybe hit a few thrift stores in between. It ended up being one of the best breaks I’ve had in a long time. There is something about completely unplugging and only having the loose rule to make something that is incredibly freeing. Like a deep breath I didn’t know I needed.
It was inspiring to revisit something I’ve always loved—making things alongside other people.
In art school, we used to pile into one dorm room with whatever supplies we had and just... make stuff. Someone painting, someone sewing, someone just cutting up paper for no reason. It didn’t matter. It was about being together. And even now, I’m still the one always nudging people to gather and create. I can’t help it—it’s where I feel most myself.

So, I’m doing something that totally lights up my creative side. This offer is available to paid Substack subscribers for $10/month, and of course, our Sketchbook Squad friends will already have access in their membership.
🧶 Introducing Make Togethers!!
Calling all crafters, sewists, sketchbookers, lego nerds, and so on. Starting this month, I’ll host casual hangouts where we make stuff together. An artist or fabric designer friend will join me, and we’ll chat podcast-style while you work on whatever you want—drawing, crafting, stitching, organizing your washi tape stash… it all counts. This is a dream for me because it combines my love of comedy, making, and connecting. If you can’t make these live, paid subscribers can also enjoy highlight replays the week after in my newsletter. Cameras will be off on participants, so feel free to wear jammies.
We’ll play some art games, share ideas, and mostly just enjoy that cozy feeling of creating in good company.
Our first one is happening:
📅 Wednesday, May 28
🕚 11am–1pm EST
💻 Online (link will be shared in the paid feed next week)
If you're in Sketchbook Squad, it's already included for you. If you’re a paid subscriber here on Pattern + Process, you’ll get the link and the highlight replay too.
No pressure, no perfection—just time to make and be.
I think many artists can agree that this journey of making stuff can be lonely, even with the internet right at our fingertips. Come be around like-minded makers, learn something from the live entertainment, and possibly make something creative along the way.
Hope to see you there,
Sarah
I recently did the same, a much needed getaway w art friends! It's amazing how restorative it was. I'm also the one who organized our first in person meet-up three yrs ago, and continues to plan them regularly. Hooray for us!!👊👊👊🫶 I'm going to consider your new makers meetings!🫶
OH HOW FUN!
